Tuesday night’s contest became a pitcher’s duel early, as LHP Hayden Wynja (1-1) received the loss for his 4.0 IP, five hit and 3 earned run outing — in which he earned all of Tri-City’s runs.
For the Dust Devils, it was RHP Jorge Macheco (2-2), who pitched a dazzling 6.0 innings with just three hits and one earned.
The Emeralds never found their offense in this contest, as Eugene tallied just three hits — none of which were extra-base hits. Also, two of those hits were infield singles, but the base runners beat out the throws.
Even the three hits felt undeserved, as the Emeralds fell to 18-9 and the Dust Devils moved to 10-17.
Tri-City got off to the races in the top of the first with an emphatic Matt Coutney double over the head of Eugene right fielder Tanner O’Tremba.
A grounder right back to Wynja and a swinging strikeout got him out of the inning — stranding two in scoring position to close out the opening frame.
The Emeralds responded in the bottom of the first, as some adept base running brought second baseman Quinn McDaniel to third from first during Diego Velasquez’s at-bat.
McDaniel stole second and reached third after a Velasquez bunt. With one out, catcher Onil Perez smacked a deep fly-ball to left field, which drove in McDaniel for the first run of the game.
The Emeralds’ hitters continued to generate contact, but nothing that the Dust Devils had any trouble with. More Eugene runs were kept at bay — almost single-handedly — by two incredible catches from Tri-City right fielder Jorge Ruiz.
The next few innings passed without much happening, but on the opening at-bat of the fourth, Coutney came back with a monster shot to right field that landed on top of the player development building.
That tied the game at one, as the Dust Devils started to read Wynja’s off-speed arsenal, which generated offense. Wynja surrendered a double to Mason Martin shortly afterward and set up a one out opportunity with two RISP.
Another hit and a walk set up a bases loaded opportunity with two outs — one which Tri-City would not pass up.
Caleb Ketchup jumped on a fastball down the middle and sent it into shallow left field, which drove in two runs and gave the Dust Devils their first lead of the night at 3-1.
After another quiet offensive inning for Eugene, the Ems sent out righty Daniel Blair to relieve Wynja in the top of the fifth.
In his 5.0 innings, two hits, and four punch-outs, Blair used his velocity to sit down Tri-City batters and keep the Emeralds in the contest.
Blair also showed his fielding acumen with an incredible behind the back play that prevented a single and even more trouble for Eugene in the top of the seventh.
Blair nearly didn’t exit the seventh clean, as a Mason Martin double down the right field line almost sent Coutney home from first, but a fantastic relay from O’Tremba to McDaniel caught him at the plate to finish the inning.
The bottom of the seventh gave way to lefty Leonard Garcia, relieving Marcheco after his outstanding performance.
Garcia dealt with the six batters he faced in order, and the Dust Devils brought in their closer — righty Camden Minacci — to close the contest out at 3-1.
Another 1-2-3 inning ensued and the Emeralds were shut down on Tuesday night.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. as the series continues.
