Memes have been around for years, everyone at universities just found and decided to butcher them now.

The idea of a Meme has been around since the mid 19th century and is not just an “inside joke”. Meme’s are a tool of biology and social phenomena, that work to carry cultural ideas or practices through generations. Lately the photos circulating the internet have been called memes for not the image and text, but the background feeling it conveys to the reader.

Furthermore most of the memes featured on the Facebook group and at the picture top of the article are used incorrectly which then opens the floor to debate if that would even be considered a meme or just a funny picture trying to replicate a meme. Furthermore as other commentators have proposed. This is not specific to UofO and one only has to look as far as Reddit.com to find this out.

I think this is great however, I ask the creators to be mindful of offensive and racist memes. We do not want our reputation as a student body and as an university to be viewed in that kind of light. Please regulate and monitor oppressive content for the sake of UO.

Emerald should really do more research. This is not an original idea. I’d say about 100 University specific meme pages have sprouted in the past couple days.
