The Oregon men’s tennis team put an exclamation mark on its performance at the UC Davis ITA Aggie invite Sunday in Davis, Calif., by winning the top doubles and singles matchups of the weekend.
The Ducks’ top-seeded Robin Cambier captured a first-place finish in the ITA Aggie singles bracket and then later joined up with fellow Duck Kevin Farin to win the ITA Aggie doubles bracket on Sunday.
The wins are especially noteworthy for the Ducks, who are looking to build on last season’s success and climb in the rankings in the Pac-12. In the 13-team field, the Ducks showed that they can compete with some of the best tennis teams on the West Coast.
Cambier and Farin capped a perfect run in their bracket with a 8-5 victory over Portland’s Alex Ferrero and Ratan Gill. With the win, the doubles team built off their summer momentum — they both competed together in Belgium.
On the singles side of the tournament, Farin found himself up against California’s Mads Engsted. Farin fell in the first set and second set by finals of 6-4 and 7-5, respectively.
Farin’s teammate, Cambier, matched up with Engsted in the final. The much-anticipated match of the two top seeds resulted in a straight-set victory for Cambier. He only fell in two games and cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win.
“It shows that we’re starting in a very good place,” head coach Nils Schyllander told GoDucks.com. “Robin’s singles final might have been the best I’ve seen him play. He played at a high level for the entire invitational and this should give him a lot of confidence.”
Freshman Jayson Amos continued to impress in his Ducks debut. He reached the semifinals of the ITA Big West singles bracket. Amos picked up a first set win, but fell in the next two sets. His opponent took the final two sets 6-2, 6-4 to capture the semifinal victory.
The Ducks will travel back to Northern California on Oct. 18-22 to compete in the ITA Regionals.
