I hate to fuel the “Will Chip leave?” fire, but USA Today’s George Schroeder — former sports columnist for the Eugene Register Guard — reported today that Oregon would likely promote offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich in the event that head coach Chip Kelly accepts a position in the National Football League.@@http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/pac12/2012/11/03/pac-12-college-football-oregon-usc-southern-cal/1679595/@@
This comes from a source who is said to have “knowledge of the school’s plan.”
Kelly was reported to have meetings set up for the day following the Fiesta Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Browns.
If Kelly were to leave he would be forced to buy out the remainder of his contract for $2.5 million for liquidated damages.
Updates to follow.
