With the Pac-12 title game on the horizon, the Oregon football team (10-1, 7-1 Pac-12) came out strong against in-state rival Oregon State (5-6, 1-6 Pac-12), nearly shutting them out 30-3 in the first half of the 118th Civil War. Simply put, everything went in favor of the Ducks.
Junior back Storm Woods may have done his part to keep the Beavers afloat, recording 83 yards on 12 carries, but it just wasn’t enough. Marcus Mariota led the Ducks with 284 total yards and four touchdowns with true freshman Royce Freeman adding 68 yards on the ground.
Key plays:
– Mariota gets his first touchdown of the evening with a 29-yard pass to a wide open Charles Nelson on a wheel route on the Ducks’ first drive of the game.
– Wogan hits a 30-yard field goal midway through the first quarter to give the Ducks a 9-0 lead.
– Freeman makes a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch to give the Ducks a 16-0 lead early in the second quarter.
– With Oregon State punting and the Ducks up 16-0 in the second quarter, Nelson muffs a Beavers punt but the balls rolls out of bounds, giving Oregon the ball.
– Three plays after the muffed punt return, Mariota hits Byron Marshall for a 77-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 23-0.
– Just for good measure, and to give his arm a break, Mariota runs 23 yards for a touchdown to make the score 30-0 with over 9 minutes left in the second quarter.
– The Beavers get a last second field goal from 39-yards out to make the score 30-3 at the half.
Three things to watch in second half:
– With less than 10 recorded first downs, the Beavers offense just couldn’t get going in any facet. With Woods providing their only spark, and Sean Mannion struggling in the air, the Beavers have a lot of ground to make up in the second half. Oregon’s defense played as good as they have all season tonight. We’ll see if it holds up for the remaining 30 minutes.
– Oregon broke the Civil War scoring record with 65 points in their last meeting. With 30 in the first half, will the Ducks raise the bar again?
– Byron Marshall’s season-high for yards was set at 138 against South Dakota in their season opener. With 128 yards in the first half alone, look for him to exit the regular season with a new personal best.
