While you were enjoying your much-needed rest and relaxation over winter break, Ducks sports were still in full action.
Both basketball teams combined to go 21-2 in non-conference play, one of the best combined starts ever in Oregon’s history. The football team dismantled the Texas Longhorns 30-7 in the Valero Alamo Bowl.
Here is what you missed over winter break.
Men’s basketball
Led by the play of transfers Joseph Young and Mike Moser, Oregon has sprinted out of the gate to a 12-0 non-conference record, including an opening day win over Georgetown in South Korea.
Young (20.2 ppg) and Moser (14.3 ppg) have combined to average just over 34 points per game while Moser is the team’s leader in rebounds and Young gives the Ducks a viable scorer in late-game situations.
The Ducks played two games in overtime in their non-conference slate, the biggest of which came Dec. 8 in Mississippi when Oregon rallied late to beat Ole Miss 115-105. Johnathan Loyd had his biggest game as a Duck when he notched career-highs of 23 points and 15 assists to off put the 39 points scored by Marshall Henderson of Ole Miss.
Oregon began Pac-12 play as the No. 10 team in the country with a victory over Utah but a loss to No. 20 Colorado.
Women’s basketball
Chrishae Rowe’s strong performance combined with the continued dominance of sophomore Jillian Alleyne has Oregon off to its best start under head coach Paul Westhead since 2010.
Westhead’s fast-paced, run-and-gun offense has caught Oregon’s opponents completely off guard and under prepared and led to some pretty impressive stats.
Rowe is second in the Pac-12 in scoring by averaging 24.5 points per game and has been named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week four of the eight weeks throughout the non-conference play. Likewise, Alleyne is third in the Pac-12 with 20.8 points per game while leading the conference with 14.2 rebounds per game.
Oregon’s seven-game winning streak came to an end when conference play started as the Ducks fell to No. 4 Stanford and No. 23 Cal on the road. @@Need to double check Cal before printing@@
Football
When Marcus Mariota is healthy, it’s a proven fact that the Ducks are a much stronger team.
Mariota’s showing at the Alamo Bowl, 18-for-26 for 253 yards and 15 carries for 133 yards, was a big reason why the Ducks faithful have a lot to be excited about regarding next year.
In Nick Aliotti’s last game as Oregon’s defensive coordinator before retirement, the Ducks’ defense went out with a stellar showing by returning two interceptions for touchdowns in the victory.
Apart from the big-time win, the football team received an early Christmas gift when Bishard “Budda” Baker, No. 9 safety and 147th best high school player in the country committed to become a Duck over many schools on the West Coast, mainly the University of Washington.
The recruiting trail picked up steam for Oregon with the commitment of Baker and now the Ducks are finalists for another ESPN 300 member in athlete John Smith.
