– The Oregon women’s basketball team will get the chance to even the series against Oregon State as they travel to Corvallis Monday night for the 92nd Civil War. Oregon lost 88-80 on Saturday as they played host to the Beavers in the first game of the back-to-back series. Ducks center Jillian Alleyne led the team in the loss, finishing with her 12th double-double of the season. Alleyne had 26 points and 12 rebounds. For the Beavers it was Ruth Hamblin who made the difference, scoring a career-high 27 points on 13-of-18 shooting. Oregon will hope they can snap a three-game losing skid in Pac-12 play after they entered league action on a seven-game winning streak.
– Don Pellum will be named the new Oregon defensive coordinator, according to sources. Pellum, who has been on the Ducks staff for 21 years, takes over for retired Nick Aliotti. Pellum has not only coached for the Ducks, he also played four years at Oregon. Pellum also has extensive experience recruiting on the defensive end, having coached linebackers, safeties and defensive linemen. Erik Chinander has been brought in to fill the outside linebacker coaching duties. The official announcement of the hire is expected early this week.
– After ripping off 13 straight wins, the Oregon men’s basketball team now faces the reality of a three-game losing streak. Their most recent defeat came at the hands of Stanford, who came into Matthew Knight Arena and beat the Ducks 82-80 on Sunday. The Ducks had two chances late to tie the game and force overtime, but point guard Johnathan Loyd’s jumper was short and backup point guard Dominic Artis couldn’t finish a late layup at the buzzer. Oregon will now have a six-day break before travelling to Corvallis to face the Beavers.
– The Oregon Athletic Department is launching a “Phil It UP” campaign for the men’s basketball game against USC on Feb. 1. The goal is to sell out Matthew Knight Arena in honor of Oregon alum Phil Knight. Knight, who is the co-founder of Nike and frequent benefactor to the University, will be celebrating his 76th birthday on that day. As an additional incentive to attend, all fans who go to the game will be given a unique Phil Knight bobblehead.
– Seattle Seahawks fans were at it again as they generated yet another earthquake during their playoff game against the New Orleans Saints. The earthquake happened during a Marshawn Lynch touchdown run. Lynch finished the game with 140 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The Seahawks will play host to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC title game.
