Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota won the Davey O’Brien award on Thursday night. The Davey O’Brien award is presented to the best quarterback in college football.
“I really just wanted to go out there and win games,” Mariota said on ESPN. “Everything else that’s happened is just a blessing.”
Mariota won the award over Texas Christian quarterback Trevone Boykin and Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott.
Mariota threw for 3783 yards, 38 touchdowns and two interceptions for the 12-1 Ducks. He also ran for 669 yards and 14 touchdowns. In Oregon’s 31-24 loss to Arizona, Mariota also caught a 26-yard touchdown pass on a throw from Royce Freeman.
The last four winners of the Davey O’Brien award have gone on to win the Heisman Trophy. The Heisman trophy will be presented in New York City on Saturday.
Oregon will play against Florida State in the inaugural College Football Playoff on New Years Day. The Ducks will take on the Seminoles in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
Here’s some reaction:
Congratulations to Marcus Mariota of @WintheDay @GoDucks, our 2014 Davey O’Brien Award winner! #CFBAwards

I would joke about Oregon needing to build a new wing for all of the trophies Marcus Mariota is going to win but I doubt that’s a problem.
