The Oregon Ducks were able to sneak out a 60-58 win over the Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis Saturday. The classic rivalry between the two teams had another epic moment at the end of the game; this time in the form of an N’Faly Dante dunk with one second left in the game.
“Jermaine [Couisnard] passed to me to finish the game and I just blacked out,” Dante said about what he was thinking about during the final play.
The dunk came after a drawn-up play devolved into chaos following multiple missed shots and offensive rebounds. However, it is the outcome of the play that matters much more than how it arrived at that point.
The how it got to that point is infinitely more interesting in this game. There are plenty of odd stats that jump out from this game. The first is the 3-point shooting. The two teams combined to shoot 4-37 from behind the arc, which is just a 10.8% mark. The shooting was a story all night, with the Beavers unable to use 3-pointers to help their comeback effort and the Ducks were unable to slam the door shut with baskets from deep.
The other major stat from the game came in the form of bench points, or rather, the lack thereof. Despite getting 24 minutes from Brennan Rigsby and 14 minutes from Kario Oquendo, Oregon got no points off the bench. Oregon State fared no better in that regard. It relied on its bench for less minutes than the Ducks, but also received no points to help the comeback attempt.
“Well we went into the season thinking our depth was going to be our calling card,” said Dana Altman, head coach of the team. “We wanted to have a deep team and three of the guys that we started opening night [have missed significant time].”
The lack of bench scoring meant that the trio of Dante, Jackson Shelstad and Jermaine Cousinard for Oregon combined for 50 of the 60 points. The beavers had a more balanced scoring attack, with all of their starters having at least nine points on the night. Jordan Pope, the leading scorer for Oregon State so far this season, had just 10 points on an inefficient 4-17 from the field, which helped Oregon withstand the strong scoring performance from other Beavers.
For a Ducks team that is playing for their chance to get into the NCAA Tournament, this loss would have been disastrous. They were able to escape with a win, but the manner was uninspiring. The Beavers outscored Oregon 20-9 in the final six minutes of the game. The Ducks were able to hold onto their lead just long enough to escape with a win, but for a team that has to play almost perfectly for the rest of the season, the game did not help their case.
Oregon will continue a road trip with a game against the Stanford Cardinal at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 22.
