The University of Oregon will remain closed all of Tuesday, Jan. 16, and Wednesday, Jan. 17, due to dangerous ice conditions. In a Jan. 15 email to students, the university said that “Campus is closed and all classes and events on campus are cancelled all day Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to weather and safety concerns.
The email additionally advises students to exercise caution when traveling outside and to avoid tree covered routes, as branches could fall and cause injury.
In a follow up email to students on Jan. 16, the university said, “Campus cleanup is underway but ice clearing and melting takes longer than snow.” As such, campus will remain closed on Wednesday.
The UO has been closed since the evening of Jan. 13 due to the ice storm, and would have been closed Monday, Jan. 15 regardless, in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. A MLK Day march organized by the Eugene/Springfield NAACP that was scheduled to leave at 9:30 a.m. from Autzen Stadium was also canceled.
The city of Eugene has declared an Ice/Snow Emergency, as the icy weather has left roadways dangerous for drivers and pedestrians alike. The city has just 14 snow plows and is working on clearing ice from important roads and bridges. Work teams have been operating day and night to remove fallen trees that are blocking traffic. Power lines throughout Eugene have also been knocked down.
According to the Eugene Water and Electric Board, which covers Eugene in addition to the towns of Walterville, Deerhorn and Vida, approximately 23,700 customers are yet to have their lost power restored.
Conditions are expected to improve late Tuesday into Wednesday, as temperatures rise into the mid-40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit and warm rain melts the ice.
This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
