After the serve came over the net from UCLA (8-4, 0-2 Pac-12), the No. 6 Ducks (12-1, 2-0 Pac-12) put the “volley” in volleyball.
Once the typical kill from the right side was set up for Oregon, the Bruins responded with their own kill, which was blocked from the same side but the ball snuck through their hands and rolled down the net.
When the ball got out of the net, libero Georgia Murphy sent the ball back over to keep the rally going. As the Bruins started to set up for their second kill in an attempt for the point, the front row shifted to the other side for another block. UCLA was able to recover and pushed the ball back toward the out-of-bounds line, forcing the Ducks to softly pass the ball back over.
A lot of people say a third time is a charm, but that wasn’t the case for the Bruins. After a third kill attempt, Oregon switched back over to the right side for a rally-ending block, which was one of the 13 the No. 6 Ducks had in the sweep (25-14, 25-12, 25-18) against UCLA in the opening weekend of Pac-12 play.
The Ducks opened up the game with a 4-0 run to put Oregon ahead 8-3. Once they found their groove, nothing could stop them, which was the common theme of the game. The Bruins were able to add to the board periodically, but after back-to-back kills from Mimi Colyer, Oregon was consistently creeping up to match point before UCLA hit 15.
The Ducks finished the first set with 18 digs, five blocks, and a service ace for an 11-point win of the first set.
After the teams switched sides of the court, it seemed like UCLA bounced back. Shortly after it started, the Bruins had a four-point lead, forcing the Ducks to call a timeout. But, an ace from Colyer put the Ducks back in the game at 7-all and they didn’t take their foot off the break.
A 5-1 run getting the Ducks to 13-10 quickly turned into a nine-point lead for Oregon. Once the Ducks’ got to the final points of the set, UCLA was only able to score two more points against Oregon’s defense.
A little deja vu took place at the Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles today when Oregon opened up the final set the same way as the first. Before you knew it, the Ducks were up 18-9, but UCLA started to put up a fight.
The home team went on a 7-1 run to put itself back in the game and cut the deficit to three. But, Oregon was able to end their run thanks to freshman Noemie Glover. The Ducks closed out the set and only gave up two more points following the run to UCLA before walking away with their 12th win this season and extending their win streak to six straight.
Oregon is back in action September 29 against Washington to kick off a two-game homestand. The first serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. and is available to watch on Pac-12 network.
