The first baskets of the game for the Ducks all came from Jackson Shelstad. He began the game with seven straight points. Oregon snagged an early 7-2 lead from that run from Shelstad, which included a steal leading to a fastbreak layup on Cal Baptist’s second possession of the game. The Ducks never looked back from that point forcing the Lancers to never lead in the game as Oregon won 76-55 on Tuesday night.
Cal Baptist was only able to get one shot attempt off, a made three pointer, in the first four minutes, with the Ducks forcing five turnovers during that span.
After that scoring burst early, the Oregon offense fell flat. The Ducks failed to score for more than five minutes. During that stretch, however, the Lancers were only able to score two points, leading to a 7-5 score over seven minutes into the game.
The lid on the basket was finally broken following a massive block from Kario Oquendo that led to an alley-oop from Shelstad to Jadrian Tracey. An Oquendo three-pointer on the next possession brought the Oregon lead up to seven halfway through the first half.
Cal Baptist took advantage of another cold stretch by the Ducks to go on a 7-0 and tie the game up in less than two minutes. One run was met immediately with another, as Oregon responded with a 7-0 run of its own to bring the lead back up to seven. The Lancers were able to tie the game back up at 23 with about five minutes left in the first half.
Oregon was able to string some baskets together to extend the lead heading into halftime, but a fouled Cal Baptist three-point shooter undid some of that work with two seconds left in the half. After Scotty Washington made two of his three attempts, the Ducks took a 36-31 lead into the half.
“Part of it today was the foul trouble,” Dana Altman, head coach of the team said about the struggles in the first half. “We didn’t have very good rotations. We had a couple combinations out there that we haven’t had even in practice.”
After neither team was able to score early in the second half, Oregon finally broke through two and a half minutes into the second half. A three-pointer from Brennan Rigsby and a made jumper from Shelstad on the next possession gave the Ducks a double-digit lead for the first time in the game.
Both teams traded baskets for a couple minutes, with the lead staying relatively consistent throughout. However, a 9-2 run from the Ducks, which included a technical foul called on the Lancers, helped Oregon start to pull away with about twelve minutes left in the game and the score at 53-38.
“I feel like we’ve been having that recipe where we come out and feel the team out,” Oquendo said about the shift from the first half to the second half. “And then in the second half we usually come out and blow the game open, but I feel like we gotta be better in the first half too.”
Another 7-0 run from the Ducks shortly after, punctuated by Rigsby’s third three-pointer of the game, coming off an assist from Shelstad, made the score 63-44 just over halfway into the second half. Shelstad continued his stellar play, as a layup during the run gave him 15 points for the game, a career high.
“He’s playing really hard,” Altman said about Shelstad’s play on both ends. “And Dan, who’s their best offensive player, [Shelstad] had him most of the time and I thought he did a really good job.”
Oregon pushed the lead to 20 points with a Oquendo three-pointer, again on an assist from Shelstad, further improving his excellent playmaking numbers. Going into the game, the most assists Shelstad had recorded in a game was three. A pass to Oquendo for a fastbreak dunk gave Shelstad his eighth of the game.
The Ducks finished the game by holding Cal Baptist to just one field goal in the final four minutes as Oregon cruised to a 76-55 win.
