2015 has been the year for construction, and expect more construction after you return from spring vacation.
Major changes are happening in the EMU as the $95 million renovation moves forward. With food service shutting down for the constructions, including two coffee houses that are closing for good, the remaining of the building will be closing down.
According to the planning document, most parts of the main floor and ground floor will be unaccessible, including the Fishbowl, the Buzz and food service area.
For students, faculty and staff members who look for a quick meal or a cup of coffee, EMU director Laurie Woodward recommends they try out the University of Oregon Housing food services located next door in Carson hall and Common Grounds Cafe.
Joe’s Burger, a Portland-based restaurant will come to the UO campus for the first time with a food truck outside the amphitheater on 13th Avenue, together with a Subway food truck which will also serve coffee.
Parts of the EMU that will remain open include the Taylor Lounge, Walnut room, U.S. Bank and the Craft Center.
Across the street, another building is shutting its door for a major remodel. Columbia 150 is getting a $2.2 million renovation to transform into an efficient classroom for students.
Columbia 150 is the only lecture hall on campus that is able to seat 500 students, and this will be the first major remodel of the building since 1960.
Planning associate Gene Mowery said the design for the lecture hall is not yet finalized, but the construction will start this spring.
But while one 500-seat lecture hall closes, another opens its door. The project to join Straub Hall and Earl Hall is underway for spring term class.
In addition, the $22 million expansion will add in another three-story construction in Straub Hall, providing several joint classrooms between the two halls.
For basketball enthusiasts on campus, the Student Recreation Center has finished a three-court basketball court in the Uptown are with a grand opening on March 16.
Students will also notice new doors and hallways in the facility as the crew plans to finish during spring break. The music system will also be improved with the continuing effort from the staff after spring break, associate director of the rec center Bryant Haunert said.
Haunert said the feedback from students about the renovated rec center has been positive, but there’s still room for improvement.
“We try to listen and respond to the suggestions from students,” Haunert said. “It’s what we always try to work toward to.”
