The stage was set for a historic moment in Los Angeles Sunday afternoon at the Pac-12 Multi Championships.
Oregon track and field senior Dakotah Keys attempted to claim his fourth straight Pac-12 Championship in the decathlon, a feat no other athlete in conference history has accomplished. After day one at Drake Stadium on UCLA’s campus, he was sitting in fourth place. As day two began, he started to climb up the standings, looking set to win.
Instead, Keys failed to record a mark in the pole vault, scratching all three of his attempts at 4.53 meters. The result was surprising. The pole vault is usually a strong event for Keys. The no-height took him out of contention for the title.
Arizona junior Pau Tonnesen won the decathlon (7823) and Stanford freshman Harrison Williams finished second (7679). Washington State’s Alissa Brooks-Johns won the heptathlon (5803).
Oregon freshman Ashlee Moore finished fourth in the heptathlon en route to a personal record, 5512 points.
Mitch Modin placed fourth (7417) and Joe Delgado took sixth (7337) in the decathlon.
Keys finished 10th with 6867 points.
With multiple scorers in the multi-events Oregon is set up for a solid performance next weekend for the individual portion of the Pac-12 Championships. The Ducks men have eight points while the women have five.
