The Oregon Ducks (27-19, 9-11) edged out Stanford (19-25, 5-15) 4-3 on Saturday to earn their fourth straight win with three weeks to go in the regular season.
Oregon took the series after picking up a 7-3 win behind Cole Irvin’s seven solid innings on Friday. The Ducks swept the three-game series the last time the teams met in Eugene in 2013.
Scott Heineman, Brandon Cuddy and Daniel Patzlaff opened the floodgates with three consecutive series to open the second inning. With the bases loaded, Tim Susnara crushed a double to score the game’s first two runs. A pair of sac flies from Mark Karaviotis and Jakob Goldfarb extended Oregon’s lead to 4-0.
Freshman starting pitcher David Peterson tossed 6.1 strong innings, but threw one pitch too many. He maintained a shutout threw six innings, but gave up a three-run dinger to Alex Dunlap and was promptly pulled. Cooper Stiles entered for Peterson and promptly shut down the rally.
The Oregon bullpen had yet another superb showing, allowing just one baserunner and no hits over 2.2 innings. Exactly like Friday night, Nogosek threw a scoreless eighth and Cleavinger threw a scoreless ninth. Nogosek’s 27 and Cleavinger’s 25 appearances rank fourth and sixth in the Pac-12, respectively.
George Horton confirmed Josh Graham would have started the series’s final game on the mound, had the catcher-turned-pitcher not been suspended all weekend for breaking a team rule. Instead, Conor Harber, who has no wins in six starts this season, will likely get the rock for game three Sunday, 2 p.m. at P.K. Park.
