Oregon dominated Oregon State on Friday with a final score of 6.5 to 2.5 in the inaugural Civil War Challenge in Portland.
The tournament teed off at 8 a.m. with a greensome format featuring three sets of two players from each team. Each of the two members of the set would tee off and, after picking the best tee shot, they would alternate shots until the hole was finished.
The team of Caroline Inglis and Kelsey Ulep picked up a win while Cathleen Santoso and Marcella Pranovia tied. Oregon’s Cassy Isagawa and Cali Hipp fell to a team that included Chelsea Saelee, the Beavers’ highest ranked player (no.219). By then end of the morning the Ducks and Beavers were tied with 1.5 points each.
At noon, the six golfers from each team faced off against each other in match play. Five of the six Ducks picked up a point by winning their matches, including Cathleen Santoso over Saelee. Ashlee Pickerell captured the sole Beaver victory of the afternoon over Cassy Isagawa.
The scores from Friday’s challenge will not count towards the Ducks’ overall season statistics. However, it resembled the new format of the NCAA Golf Championships, which will feature the final eight teams in a 72-hole, match play tournament for the national crown.
Oregon will continue its spring season next weekend in the Peg Bernard Invitational at Stanford.
