Jillian Alleyne and Jacinta Vandenberg combined for 29 points and 21 rebounds as Oregon knocked off UC Santa Barbara 79-51 to improve to 3-0 on the season.
The Ducks overcame 27 turnovers on the floor, the program’s highest mark since it played Arizona State in January 2013 under former coach Paul Westhead.
Alleyne, who had 13 rebounds, recorded her 19th consecutive double-double. Vandenberg had three blocks and was one point shy of her career-high of 15 points.
Maite Cazorla finished with eight points and 10 assists for the Ducks, the most assists for a UO player since 2013. Lexi Petersen tallied 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. UCSB and Oregon combined for 48 turnovers.
“I was just really disappointed with the turnovers tonight, guys,” head coach Kelly Graves said. “I was as frustrated as everybody in there. It’s not really our nature… We struggled to kind of keep our composure.”
Oregon never trailed against UCSB (1-3) and led 19-12 after the first quarter. Oregon had assists on its first four buckets. UCSB had a 9-0 run in the first, but a Jordan Loera 3-pointer stopped the run. The Ducks turned the ball over nine times in the first quarter, compared to UCSB’s mark of seven. The Gauchos forced seven steals and the Ducks collected three.
Alleyne said the Gauchos got the Ducks on their heels offensively when they applied full-court pressure. She hopes the team can work on “crisp and clean passes” in future games.
“I think a big focus of ours in practice is help-defense,” Vandenberg said. “If our guy gets beat, it’s our job to step across. That’s what we’ve been trying to do.”
UCSB’s Jasmine Ware led the Gauchos with 12 points at the guard spot. Oregon held UCSB to 31 percent shooting from the field on the game, while the Ducks shot 57 percent. Despite the turnovers, Oregon had a strong inside-out game, shooting 8-of-16 from 3-point range. Graves said Oregon’s ability to stretch the defense will help them as the season progresses; the guards and the posts can both attract defensive attention.
“I never thought we were going to lose the game at either point,” Graves sad. “We weren’t able to sustain anything positive on the offensive end; mainly that was because of the turnovers.”
The Ducks ended the first half on a 13-6 run. At the half, both teams had a combined 28 turnovers. The Ducks held UCSB to 30 percent shooting from the floor before intermission, but UCSB had 13 steals.
“We’re going to be at our best this year when we have a good flow inside and outside,” Graves said.
Ducks put together an 8-0 run capped by a pair of Alleyne free throws to give Oregon a 47-29 lead with 6:30 left in the third. Oregon held a 60-43 advantage after three quarters and Oregon outscored UCSB in all four quarters. Oregon’s largest lead — 28 points — came with 3:07 remaining in the game.
“We always do have a mismatch down low somewhere,” Vandenberg said. “It’s how we find it that changes.”
Oregon stays in Eugene for its next nine nonconference games, with Clemson coming to town on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. matchup.
“They’re going to have really athletic players,” Graves said. “They’re used to playing really good competition in the ACC, which is arguably the best conference in the country, RPI-wise. We’re going to have to play a lot better than we did tonight.”
