Three things to watch for in the second half:
Can Oregon stop wide receiver Cooper Kupp?
The junior has caught eight passes for 160 yards and a touchdown, while the rest of the Eagles’ receiving corps has netted 10 catches for 104 yards and touchdown. Oregon’s young secondary may have to put two defenders on Kupp to neutralize him.
Will Tony Brooks-James or Kani Benoit show any separation?
With Thomas Tyner out for the season, one of the major questions heading into the first game has been who will be the primary backup at running back? Benoit currently has 4 carries for 46 yards and 1 touchdown, while Brooks-James has four for 37 yards and one touchdown. If the Ducks expand their lead in the second half, Royce Freeman will likely exit the game, allowing the two to see more playing time.
After limping off the field in the second quarter, how much will Joe Walker play in the second half?
Walker has totaled three tackles in the game. He limped off the field early in the second quarter and came back on the field for one more snap.
Key plays:
– After evading an EWU pass rusher, Vernon Adams hits a wide open Kani Benoit near the line of scrimmage for a 19-yard pass to set up first and goal.
– On the next play, Benoit scores on an 8 yard rushing touchdown.
– Jordan West completes a five-yard pass to Shaq Hill on 4th and 1. The Eagles added a 33-yard pass to Cooper Kupp and a 12-yard touchdown pass to Hill on the next two plays.
– Two consecutive big gains by Kani Benoit (26-yard pass) and Tony Brooks-James (18-yard run) set Oregon up in the red zone at the end of the first quarter.
– After catching about ten yards past the line of scrimmage, Cooper Kupp runs for a total of 73 yards to set the Eagles up inside the five.
– On 4th and 2, West hits Kendrick Bourne four a touchdown, cutting the Ducks’ lead to 27-14.
– After nearly throwing an interception, Vernon Adams throws a 39-yard pass to Dwayne Stanford, setting up a three-yard touchdown run by Royce Freeman with 10:37 left in the first half.
– Chris Seisay picks off West on Oregon’s side of the field. Vernon Adams then fumbles on a run up the middle, giving the ball back to Eastern Washington. Cooper Kupp would later score on a 16-yard touchdown pass.
– On 4th and 6 and with roughly 2:00 left in the half, Vernon Adams nearly completes a pass to Byron Marshall for a 30-yard touchdown, but cornerback D’londo Tucker breaks it up.
