Mike White’s had a whirlwind of a week.
Last week, the Ducks broke ground on the new Jane Sanders Stadium and on Wednesday, the Oregon head coach received a contract extension that will keep him in Eugene through 2021.
White’s contract — worth $1.425 million over six years — averages $237,500 annually through 2021. The change is a $37,000 raise from his previous contract.
His new contract, which officially starts on July 1, 2015 will earn White $225,000 in his first year. His guaranteed salary will increase by $5,000 each year, earning him $250,000 in 2020. In addition, White will receive 10 season tickets to all softball games in the covered section at the new Jane Sanders Stadium.
White, the Ducks’ winningest coach in program history, led Oregon to a berth at the Women’s College World Series in his sixth season. It was the third time in four years the Ducks have advanced to the WCWS.
“I’m so excited to be able to keep coaching at this great institution,” White said in an Oregon athletic department release. “The support the administration has shown softball – with new Jane Sanders Stadium and today’s announcement – and all women’s athletics has been absolutely tremendous.”
According to his contact, as obtained by the Emerald in a public records request, White can earn $25,000 for a Pac-12 championship win, $10,000 for NCAA regional appearance, $15,000 for Super Regional appearance, $40,000 for WCWS berth, and $10,000 for an appearance in the championship series.
If the Ducks were to win the national championship, White would earn an additional $50,000.
White’s time at UO has by and way been the most successful period in school history. He owns a 280-83-1 record in six seasons and has helped Oregon to three straight Pac-12 championships. Before White took over the reigns at Oregon, the Ducks had never won a conference title.
“Mike White is an outstanding softball coach and under his leadership Oregon has achieved unprecedented success,” Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens said in the release. “With our exceptional student-athletes, the generosity of Mr. Sanders and now the retention of Mike White, Oregon softball is poised to make a run at a national championship.”
In White’s six seasons, Oregon has had 12 All-American selections and three straight Pac-12 pitcher of the year awards.
In an interview with Andrew Greif of The Oregonian, White said he received the extension after an interview with Arkansas.
“It was a good offer,” White said of Arkansas. “It was a tough decision, but looking at what we’ve got for next season, we’re loaded.”
White said he visited Arkansas two weeks after the Ducks were eliminated from the WCWS.
“With our new facilities and some of the best current and future softball student-athletes in America committed to the Ducks, our goal of winning national championships is attainable,” White said in the release.
