University journalism professor Dan Morrison and several University students were preparing for a photography training session early Saturday morning when Morrison saw a man try to open a door to the Jaqua Center.
“I thought it was odd because I knew the building was closed,” Morrison said. He yelled to the man, saying the building wasn’t open, but the man continued to try to force the doors open.
Morrison called his wife who then called the Department of Public Safety. Officers responded around 6 a.m. and found the man in the bathroom sitting on the toilet. The officers handcuffed the man and said he thought the building was a nightclub.
University student Barbara Bellinger witnessed the event. She said the man tried to open both doors on the east side of the building. Then he moved around to the front doors, where she and Morrison saw him get on his hands and knees and opened the door.
“Dan and I thought maybe the guy worked there because he seemed to know how to get the doors open,” Bellinger said. Six officers were at the scene by the time DPS handcuffed the man, she said.
DPS was not available for comment.
