Game One
Aaron Jones returned to the Duck lineup in a big way Friday night, driving in three of the Ducks’ four runs in his first action since an ankle sprain against Stanford.@@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPID=11401&DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=205420910@@ Oregon won 4-1 with Alex Keudell earning his sixth-straight win in his second complete game of the season.
California took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, but Oregon quickly leveled the score in the bottom half on a single from Jones, who played in the designated hitter spot to avoid having to put the stress of fielding on his recovering ankle.@@http://www.goducks.com/downloads2/451519.pdf?ATCLID=205420910&SPSID=94831&SPID=11401&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=500@@
“I don’t feel anything when I swing,” he said. “It’s just when I try and push off and run. I’m still kind of rehabbing it and getting back to full strength.”
The Ducks squandered bases-loaded opportunities in the sixth and seventh innings before a sacrifice fly from Aaron Payne and a two-RBI double from Jones gave Oregon the 4-1 lead heading into the ninth.@@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPID=11401&DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=205420910@@
Keudell struck out the first two batters of the ninth inning — his first two of the game — before California’s Chadd Krist hit what looked like a routine fly ball to centerfield until the Ducks’ Connor Hofmann appeared to lose track of the ball in the lights and missing the catch.@@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPID=11401&DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=205420910@@
With Jimmie Sherfy and Tommy Thorpe warmed up in the bullpen, head coach George Horton said that Jones’ two-run double in the eighth was the determining factor whether Keudell would be allowed to finish the game.
Game Two
A post-spring game crowd of nearly 4,000 saw Oregon beat California 3-2 to clinch the series win Saturday.@@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPID=11401&DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=205421333@@ Jake Reed picked up the win for the Ducks in a seven-inning, two-run performance; the crowd of 3,892 set a new PK Park record for Oregon baseball.@@see previous@@
The Ducks scored in the bottom of the first to take an early lead but were never able to build a comfortable lead. Aaron Payne hit a two-out single in the seventh inning to give Oregon the 3-2 lead before Thorpe and Sherfy split the remaining six outs.@@ibid@@
Game Three
Kyle Garlick’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first set the tone Sunday as Oregon finished off a three-game sweep of California in a lopsided 7-1 win.@@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPID=11401&DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=205421660@@
The clutch hit was a far cry from Garlick’s 0-6 start to the series,@@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPID=11401&DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=205421660@@ but the sophomore outfielder said he never worried.
“I just kept grinding and stuck to my approach,” he said. “Just put good swings on it.”
He continued his productive afternoon with a leadoff single in the fourth to spark an eventual three-run inning for Oregon.@@http://www.goducks.com/downloads2/452022.pdf?ATCLID=205421660&SPSID=94831&SPID=11401&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=500@@ He came around to score when a bases-loaded pitch to Payne went by Chadd Krist, and Payne cleared the bases later in the at-bat with a two-RBI single.
Oregon got seven strong innings from Jeff Gold, who gave up just one run — but it could have been worse. Gold left the game with the bases loaded and none out in the top half of the eighth, but Joey Housey worked his way out of danger, forcing Paul Tobani to ground into the unusual 1-2-3 double-play.@@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPID=11401&DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=205421660@@
It was one of several solid defensive plays for Oregon pitching, as Duck pitchers had six infield assists Saturday.
“Our pitching staff prides ourselves a lot on (pitchers’ fielding practice),” Gold said. “That’s one of my favorite things to do is field ground balls.”
Oregon now travels to Gonzaga for two midweek games before a head-to-head road clash with Arizona, where they hope to see Brando Tessar or J.J. Altobelli return to the Ducks’ lineup — though head coach George Horton made no promises.
