The No. 15 Oregon softball team took a 3-2 lead into the top of the fifth inning against No. 7 Washington Tuesday afternoon at Howe Field before the game was called off due to heavy rain.
Washington jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the top of the first, but Oregon continued its strong play at the plate in the bottom half of the frame. Sophomore third baseman Courtney Ceo@@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=4375&SPID=245&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=204963981&Q_SEASON=2011@@ led off with a double to left center, and senior shortstop Kelsey Chambers@@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=4375&SPID=245&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=1595154&Q_SEASON=2011@@ singled two batters later. With one out and runners on first and third, sophomore first baseman Kailee Cuico@@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=4375&SPID=245&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=204964495&Q_SEASON=2011@@ sent a three-run home run sailing over the left field wall to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, Washington senior Nikia Williams@@http://www.gohuskies.com/sports/w-softbl/mtt/williams_nikia00.html@@ roped an RBI double to left center to pull the Huskies within one run, 3-2. Neither team scored in the fourth inning before heavy rain stopped play with one out in the top of the fifth.
Washington sophomore Victoria Hayward@@http://www.gohuskies.com/sports/w-softbl/mtt/hayward_victoria00.html@@ was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, and Cuico was 2 for 2 with three RBI before the game was called. The Ducks will resume the game this morning at 9 a.m. with a second and final game to be played immediately after.
