The Hat moves on
The latest news out of Chicago (other than the Derrick Rose drama) is that the windy city’s Field Museum is considering hiring former University president Richard Lariviere as its head.@@http://www.bendbulletin.com/article/20120415/NEWS0107/204150415/@@ And good for him. As we previously said (not once, but twice), the State Board of Higher Education acted improperly in the way and reasons given for his sudden termination in November. But now that he is no longer holding that title, the best response from students who appreciated the time he spent there is to encourage him in his future aims. And we do just that, thanking him for his brief two-and-a-half-year tenure of service to the University.

Backward perspectives from legislators
Columnist Sam Bouchat has worked for the past month or so to analyze the ridiculous lengths that former presidential candidate Rick Santorum will go to stay unpalatable to a wider audience. Luckily, Santorum dropped out of the race. Unluckily, legislatures continue to carry on his mission of focusing on wedge issues and invasions of privacy, missing the reason they were elected completely. Our hope is that lawmakers who have this kind of control over education will focus on methods of increasing graduation rates and higher education retention and not on warning students of the social mores of hand-holding.
