ASUO President-elect Laura Hinman@@http://oregonsheen.org/@@ is planning a restructuring of the ASUO Executive for her term in office. She intends to add more positions in order to create more opportunities for student leaders.
“Most of the purpose behind this change is to create more transparency and clarity,” Hinman said.
The restructure includes the creation of Media and Public Relations Coordinators, which will take the place of the ASUO Communications Director@@http://tinyurl.com/7yx8xh5@@. Hinman explained that the reason behind these positions is to better communicate the message of the Executive. These two people will work together to work at maintaining the image of the ASUO.
Andrew Rogers, current ASUO Communications Director,@@http://asuo.uoregon.edu/executive.php?a=12#toc1109@@ thought it was interesting Hinman decided to create a position that would deal mostly with Facebook and Twitter. He said that is a good way to reach students.
“It is important to keep students invested in the work the Executive is doing,” Rogers said. “It is normal to restructure to get something that works best for the incoming Exec and students.”
Another position she plans to add is a nontraditional students advocate@@http://tinyurl.com/7n4btee@@. This person will be tasked with coordinating one special project per term to examine the issues that affect students within the nontraditional community.
There will also be an athletics commissioner that will act as the liaison between the ASUO, the athletic department, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee@@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=3641286@@ and Club Sports. This person will also explore better ways to allocate student tickets.
According to Vice President-elect Nick McCain@@http://directory.uoregon.edu/telecom/directory.jsp?p=findpeople%2Ffind_results&m=student&d=person&b=name&s=McCain@@, a class on leadership will added. It is available to everyone involved with the ASUO. The class or, Leadership Academy, will be a collaboration between Director of the Holden Center John Duncan@@http://vpsa.uoregon.edu/staff@@, ASUO Leadership Advisor Consuela Perez-Jefferis@@http://asuo.uoregon.edu/executive.php?a=28#toc539@@ and McCain.
McCain is incredibly excited about these changes.
“We’re really proud of it,” he said. “It not only addresses structural issues, but provides a foundation for the ASUO to grow and improve its image.”
