A group of students — upset by the alleged mistreatment of University professor Ken DeBevoise@@http://directory.uoregon.edu/telecom/directory.jsp?p=findpeople%2Ffind_results&m=staff&d=person&b=name&s=Ken+DeBevoise@@ — are preparing to demonstrate against the University by going on a hunger strike if a reasonable agreement regarding DeBevoise’s contract is not made before Tuesday, May 29.
The students were provoked by the lack of response from the University administration on inquiries of DeBevoise’s teaching status for next fall.
“The University of Oregon has a stated public responsibility to provide a high-quality education for undergraduate students,” the press release stated Thursday. “The removal of Professor Ken DeBevoise is demonstrably inconsistent with this mission.”
Concerned student and one of the movement’s leaders Muhammad Khalifa@@http://directory.uoregon.edu/telecom/directory.jsp?p=findpeople%2Ffind_results&m=student&d=person&b=name&s=Muhammad+Khalifa@@ told the Emerald the group doesn’t want things to come to a strike but are fully willing and prepared to. So far, about 13 students plan to go on hunger strike, including Ted Sweeney@@http://blogs.dailyemerald.com/photo/2011/01/05/ted-sweeney-uo-bike-program/@@ and Cimmeron Gillespie.@@http://directory.uoregon.edu/telecom/directory.jsp?p=findpeople%2Ffind_results&m=student&d=person&b=name&s=Cimmeron+Gillespie@@
