Beginning in fall 2012, the Department of International Studies@@http://pages.uoregon.edu/isp/@@ will begin offering three new classes. The courses, ranging between the 300 and 400 levels, are titled “Global Health and Development,” “Population Displacement” and “Reproductive Health.”
Kristin Yarris, currently an anthropology lecturer at the University of California at San Diego in the global health program,@@http://search.yahoo.com/r/_ylt=A0oGdWXZ17FPURQAzU1XNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTE1MzJjanJsBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMQRjb2xvA3NrMQR2dGlkA1NNRTA4MV8yMzU-/SIG=122ja1jk8/EXP=1337083993/**http%3a//cilas.ucsd.edu/people/Yarris%2520CV.pdf@@ will be teaching the courses. She has focused her professional research on transnational movements and how they affect family dynamics.
Dylan Geil,@@http://directory.uoregon.edu/telecom/directory.jsp?p=findpeople%2Ffind_results&m=student&d=person&b=name&s=Dylan+Geil@@ an international studies graduate student, believes the addition of Yarris to the University faculty fills a void and will be beneficial to students.
“All three of the courses she’s going to be teaching are related to global health and development,” Geil said. “We’re really excited about it because there’s been a large demand relating to those types of classes, and we haven’t been able to fill those historically. So, she’s filling the gap that we’ve recognized over the years.”
Yarris’ proposed three new curriculum sets — while being taught and implemented beginning in fall — will continue throughout the academic year.
Undergraduate adviser and graduate student Kelsey Provo@@http://www.google.com/url?q=http://pages.uoregon.edu/isp/people/faculty/profiles/kprovo/&sa=U&ei=iNixT4ytMKrI2AX88a3pCA&ved=0CAUQFjAA&client=internal-uds-cse&usg=AFQjCNErwXoKQ8nJIpXKHxtvkoBv7WTOkA@@ believes the hiring of Yarris is the beginning of the expansion of the department.
“Now we want to focus on migration, and the movement of people,” Provo said. “The whole department is just trying to expand and get more professors and instructors that are knowledgeable in the international realm.”
