Ah, it’s that time of year again.
Fraternity serenades season.
Fall term brings fraternities the gift of eager men willing to pledge and further nurture their brotherhood. These men are new to Fraternity and Sorority Life. In such a small community where everybody knows everybody, it’s important that these young men are properly introduced to their community.
And what better way to do that than to sing us a song?
Many fraternities have annual fall term serenades that they encourage (but do not force) their new members to participate in. These new men go to each sorority on a weeknight to sing and perform a choreographed song, bringing us sorority women joy and entertainment just in time for the holiday season.
Fraternity serenades are not meant to haze new members, and they aren’t made to make fools out of these brothers. These serenades are obviously practiced, the dance routines down pat. Nobody looks humiliated or belittled; it’s all in good fun and a great way to show your personality.
They can be clean, a little raunchy, sweet, or just plain awesome. We sorority women laugh at the raunchy, swoon at the sweet and our hearts melt when a pledge brother shows off his musical talent. The songs are often parodies of top hits, top hits themselves or a Christmas melody.
People often complain that Fraternity and Sorority Life isn’t one unit, that we see each other as competition instead of one community. Fraternity serenades are just one example of the ways that bring us together.
