Springfield school implementing new program
A Springfield middle school is trying a new program to mentor students and prepare them for college-level courses they could be taking in high school. Hamlin Middle School is currently in the process of training volunteers to mentor the students. The middle school is a Title I school with a high percentage of low income students.
The district’s eventual goal is for all students to graduate high school with a year of college credit, which would financially benefit college bound students and give more options to those who are not considering college.
The volunteers will meet with sixth grade students three times a year to discuss report cards, student goals and strengths. Additionally, students with below a B average will receive additional after school classes.
