Gov. John Kitzhaber proposed Friday to consolidate funding for Oregon’s universities and community colleges into one agency called the Department of Post-Secondary Education, according to Oregonlive.
Under this plan, Kitzhaber will select all board members and executives involved in education in Oregon. This new agency will also give out money based on how many students graduate, how many of those students find jobs after graduation and retention rate. Before this, money was divided between schools based on student numbers.
The operating costs of the new department would actually save money since it is combining agencies. It would create a central building for the agency instead of having offices in Eugene, Salem, Portland and Corvallis.
Kitzhaber intends to move his plan forward within a term, pending legislative approval.
