Eugene Police Department focuses on crime prevention
Eugene Police Crime Prevention Staff will be out again this week informing students on ways to keep their personal possessions safe. Staff members will be located in various areas handing out hot cocoa and crime prevention information.
According to an EPD press release, statistics show that the weeks preceding winter break have a spike in crime due to many students choosing to visit home for the holidays.
“2010 saw 30 burglaries of students’ residences. The outreach proved successful, decreasing the number by half,” the press release read. This year the prevention staff plans to outreach to even more students.
Powerball winnings up for grabs
After no one claimed the $425 million jackpot on Saturday, the jackpot is up for grabs this Wednesday.
The jackpot rolled over for the fifteenth straight time when no one was able to match the six numbers to the winning ticket. Powerball’s largest payout to date was $365 million in 2006, to eight coworkers at a Nebraska meat-packing plant.
Beaverton man crashes car and hangs above freeway in vehicle
Around 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 24 police received a call that a red truck had crashed and was now hanging precariously off an overpass above another freeway.
The man, 38-year-old Matthew Alan Hamilton of Beaverton, was trapped inside of his vehicle on the Southwest Denney Road overpass that crosses Highway 217 in Beaverton.
According to police, Hamilton’s blood alcohol content was .50 (six times the legal limit.) Hamilton will be charged with DUI and driving while suspended from a previous DUI conviction once he is released from the hospital, according to KVAL.
Convicted bank robber escapes, reward offered for his capture
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department put a $5,000 reward to find a convicted bank robber who escaped jail on Monday. Any information that leads to the arrest of Bradley William Monical will be rewarded.
Monical escaped the jail by standing on another inmate’s shoulders in the recreation hall and pulling away a piece of metal mesh from the roof covering. He then leaped into a nearby tree and climbed down, according to the Mail Tribune.
Monical is 5-foot-7 and 170 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Officers say the escape is a danger to the community.
Anyone with information should call 9-1-1 immediately.
Local deli gets robbed
Two men in their early 20s approached an employee at Jasper’s Deli on Green Acres Road around 2 a.m. on Sunday. One of the suspects threatened the employee with a fire extinguisher.
The two suspects wore ski masks and stole cigarettes from the store. Police searched the area but did not locate the robbers, according to The Register-Guard.
