Another chapter in the Highway 20 saga
State transportation officials Sunday, reopened the controversial Highway 20 project – 5.5 miles of highway in Lane County that is far over budget and years behind schedule.
The state has terminated its contractor and began with a clean slate on the project, though problems with landslides and record fines for environmental violations have already begun to complicate the work site, The Register-Guard reported.
Local High School provides venue for presidential debate
At the behest of AP Government students, Churchill High School hosted an evening of pizza and soda during the presidential debate Tuesday night, and with it, lessons in politics. Though most of them are not old enough to vote, students at Churchill proved they do care about the election this year.
About 30 students came to school Tuesday night to watch the second presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. Teachers Helen Haberman and Noah Glusman hosted the event after requests from students, The Register-Guard reported.
Nike severs ties with Lance Armstrong as fallout escalates from doping scandal
Lance Armstrong stepped down as chairman of his Livestrong cancer-fighting charity Wednesday. In a statement made early Wednesday, Armstrong addressed his decision. “To spare the [Livestrong] foundation any negative effects as a result of controversy surrounding my cycling career, I will conclude my chairmanship.”
Minutes later, Nike made a statement saying it would end its relationship with Armstrong “due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade,” KVAL reported.
One dead in Amtrak collision
An Amtrak train bound for Eugene collided with a pickup truck Monday night en route from Seattle. Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said the train was headed for Eugene, with 153 passengers, and no one aboard the train was hurt.
The crash killed the truck’s driver, according to KVAL.
Monday’s storm in Eugene three times the rainfall in Portland
In Monday’s storm, Eugene posted more than double the rainfall of Salem and triple the rainfall of Portland, creating dangerous road conditions for cars and cyclists, KVAL reported.
