When you think of ballet, it’s doubtful that classic rock music pops into your head.
But this weekend, that is exactly what the Eugene Ballet Company is bringing to the Hult Center stage: a rock ballet, set entirely to Pink Floyd’s album, “Dark Side of the Moon.”@@http://www.eugeneballet.org/darkside.html@@
“I think people will be able to relate to the youthful energy,” said Riley Grannan, managing director for the Eugene Ballet Company, of the show.@@http://www.eugeneballet.org/eugene-oregon-ballet-company-staff.html@@ “This isn’t just classical ballet stuff, it extends beyond that.”
The ballet, created by Eugene Ballet Company’s artistic manager and resident choreographer Toni Pimble,@@on last link@@ was created in 2010 and is supported by live music from the 12-piece Pink Floyd cover band, The Floydian Slips.@@http://www.myspace.com/floydianslips@@
Featuring all of the songs from the classic Pink Floyd album as heard it on the actual album, Gannan describes the show as a “spectacle” and “seamless.”
“There’s extraordinary moveable lights that they use, the atmosphere has that hazy look that is typical … through any big rock concert, so I think the looks are compatible with that kind of experience associated event,” Gannan said.
In addition to its performance of Dark Side of the Moon, the Eugene Ballet Company will also showcase three other works.
One is called “Channel Surfing,” and is based on 37 sports in 11 minutes. The next work is a famous piece from “Don Quixote,” called “Pas de Deux,” and the third piece is known as “Light Rain,” a piece created by the Joffrey Ballet and staged by Maia Wilkins. @@titles checked@@
All three parts will appear before the performance of Dark Side of the Moon.
Eugene Ballet Company’s Dark Side of the Moon will take place this Saturday and Sunday in Eugene. Tickets for students are $10 and between $22 and $48, regularly. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14.
