Lane County Circuit Judge Jay McAlpin one of three looking for a write-in vote
Kitzhaber appointee judge Jay McAlpin neglected to file for election of his Position 7 judgeship by the deadline this year, and no one else did either. Although the state Election’s Division may have played a part — the website called it the “Lake County” position — McAlpin is taking responsibility, according to The Register-Guard.
The other two candidates are Eugene business and civil litigation attorney Alan Leiman and criminal defense lawyer Vincent Mulier.
Man responsible for teenage sex trafficking sentenced to 10 years
Adam Zimmer, 36, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pimping underage girls, including a 15-year-old girl who was detrimental to the prosecution’s case. According to The Register-Guard, Zimmer had unknowingly arranged for the girl to meet with an undercover police officer. Zimmer sent the girl to the “date” while she was high on mushrooms.
This, along with proof of a few other drug-related incidents, led Zimmer to plead guilty to charges of sex trafficking of a minor and employing a minor in drug operations.
Man arrested after Springfield car chase
KEZI reported a man is in custody after leading Springfield police on a car chase late Monday night. The suspect stole the car earlier in the day, and when police attempted to pull him over, he sped away.
Ultimately he was caught and checked by medial staff before he was lodged in Lane County Jail.
Fraud charges filed against woman already deep in criminal charges
Carel Cody was charged earlier this year for stealing more than $200,000 in retirement benefits from a man dead for at least 16 years, and now she’s facing even more charges. According to The Register-Guard, the government is now filing fraud charges after it discovered Cody was transferring these illegally gained funds to her mother, and one other person, in an attempt to hide them from authorities.
Although she has not been charged with anything related to the man’s death, she has plead not guilty to charges of theft of government funds, aggravated identity theft and making a false statement to a government official.
Second language classes struggling to make impact
Nineteen of 127 of Oregon’s school districts met all four standards of 2011-12 goals for “English language learners,” reports The Register-Guard. About 39 percent of districts did not perform the tests due to the number of immigrant students being too low.
Eugene and Springfield districts did not meet the standard in at least one test. Eugene specifically did not meet standards on the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills.
