U.S. Olympian hosts 800-meter race in Springfield
In an event that drew approximately 130 competitors, two-time Olympian Nick Symmonds hosted an 800-meter race this Saturday. The U.S. distance runner, who placed fifth with a new personal record in the London Olympics this year, has been a Springfield resident for the past six years.
Symmonds told The Register-Guard that Saturday’s highlight was working with the young runners who competed in the inaugural Nick Symmonds race.
Man accused of failure to pay $880,000 in taxes
A Cottage Grove man faces charges for filing a false excise tax return and failing to pay nearly $880,000 in taxes on his distillery company, The Register-Guard reported.
The government claims that William Meyers has filed approximately 70 tax returns between 2008 and 2011 stating that his company, Side Pockets Food Co., owed no money in excise taxes required for alcohol production.
Meyers is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 29.
Skydiving company requests use permit for hay field
Eugene Skydivers has a temporary permit to continue to use a Creswell hay field as a landing zone, according to The Register-Guard.
The local business is currently in a legal battle with the city for use of Hobby Field Airport and has been using the Creswell property in the meantime. The company needs a permit to continue to use the field as the property is a farm zone.
The permit is currently pending with the Lane County Land Management Division.
