Oregon Rep. and Portland mayoral candidate Jefferson Smith was cited by Eugene police in 1993 for assault charges with a woman, Willamette Week reports. The assault occurred when Rep. Smith was at a party while he attended the University of Oregon. The Lane County District Attorney dropped the charge after then 20-year-old Smith settled out of court with the woman. Rep. Smith held a press conference about the incident Monday afternoon:
Jefferson Smith: “If I had to do it over again I would have just let her keep coming at me.” “It was the worst night of my life”

“If I were voting for the 20-year-old me, I probably wouldn’t make that person the mayor of our city,” says @jefferson4pdx.

Smith says he didn’t confess this proactively because he didn’t want to bring in other people who weren’t to blame.
