Before the weather turns to rain, get outside and enjoy the last few nice days we have left by planning a hiking trip to Spencer Butte. The butte is only 5.5 miles south of campus via Willamette Street, taking only 15 minutes by car. This gets you to the official trailhead on the left where, at the base of the butte, you have two options: One option is take the trail to the left, which is shorter but steeper. The second option is the trail to the right; it’s longer but less steep.
Items to bring:
- Old shoes — Do not bring your new Nikes along for this trip as the trail is muddy, especially in winter and spring
- Backpack for all your supplies
- Dog — This is a dog-friendly trail but be sure to bring a plastic bag to clean up, just in case
- Flashlight — If you decided to watch the sunset or sunrise, bring a flashlight to make the trip easier
- Water bottles — Each person should have their own water bottle
- Camera — Bring one for pictures of the amazing view once you get to the top
- Cell phone — Bring just in case you get stuck in a emergency situation
- Weather — Check the forecast and look outside before you leave
- Sunscreen — Protect yourself from the sun. Trees shade most of the trail, but you will be in the sun at the top
- Make sure you are wearing comfortable gear because if you are uncomfortable, you won’t enjoy yourself
- Snacks — Once you make it to the top, enjoy a snack with the breathtaking view surrounding you
- Good attitude — Keep an open mind to hiking if you’re being dragged along by a friend
- Friends and family — Enjoy each other’s company!
