Associate Professor Michele McKinley was recently awarded a $50,000 “Law and Social Science Grant” from the National Science Foundation for her research on “Legal Mobilization of Enslaved Litigants: Ecclesiastical versus Civil Lawsuits,” according to an Oregon Law news release.
McKinley’s hypothesis is looking to support the idea that enslaved men and women litigants in Lima, Peru, around the 17th century were more successful in ecclesiastical courts than secular courts.
McKinley will use the grant to continue her research.
