The decision by the ASUO Senate Wednesday night in support of a University-wide ban on conceal-carry weapons has proven to be a controversial topic for many. Here are just a few of the arguments that have been made by ODE readers since the resolution was passed. To see more of the debate, or to join in yourself, click here.
Average Joe: Isn’t this the same student senate that passed a resolution against the war in Iraq? A lot of good that did. You cannot stop concealed handgun license holders from bringing guns on campus. The state of Oregon makes the laws relating to firearms, not the U of O. Good luck facing a 2nd Amendment challenge if the U of O is stupid enough to take this issue head on. They will lose.
Lena: I’d like to see the statistics those who voted “yes” on this resolution used to back up their reasoning. I have yet to see a study that backs up the claim that concealed carry makes campuses or communities less safe.
Dod-a-chik?: Way to go! Because the statistics support the idea that gun crime is commited by law-abiding, concealed-carry citizens, right?
Brudin: Let me ask you a question: a man comes home from target shooting, finds his wife in bed with another man, and in the heat of the moment, shoots them both. Does the fact that he’s a law-abiding, concealed-carry citizen make any difference?
Asaldana: What if the same man comes back from a knife convention or a tool show and grabs a knife or hammer in the heat of the moment and kill them both? Silly rhetorical questions like these do nothing but make clear how hollow your argument really is. There is plenty of factual evidence proving that people with concealed carry permits are far less likely to commit crimes in general either with or without a gun in the first place. Really expected better than this from you Sen. Rudin.
