3 1/2 pounds of heroin seized in Cottage Grove
Driving 74 mph down I-5 near Cottage Grove, 40-year-old Angel Alberto Garcia was pulled over for having a broken tail light. After noting many suspicious actions and items in the car, the arresting officer found three and a half pounds of heroin in a hidden compartment.
Garcia was charged with possession with intent to distribute heroin and has been held in Lane County Jail since last weekend. There was an estimated 1,623.5 grams of heroin in the car. The exact street value of the amount is unknown, but according to police the typical street value for a gram of heroin is $120. Based on that price, the estimated total cost is $194,820.
Police dog helps catch perpetrator by biting him in the rear end
The driver of a stolen vehicle was finally caught after a high-speed chase, ending when a police dog bit him in the rear. Police spotted Jeremy Carlson, 34, on the Oakway Golf Course after he abandoned the vehicle.
Carlson was first spotted around 4:41 p.m. driving near the intersection of Spyglass Drive and Fairway View Drive in Eugene. There were a number of warrants out for Carlson’s arrest on charges of car theft and identity theft. He has since been connected with a Springfield hit-and-run last week.
After being bitten, Carlson was taken to McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center in Springfield before being taken to the Lane County Jail.
Man sentenced to 19 years in jail in sexual abuse case
Christopher Michael Kemp, 39, was sentenced to 19 years in jail for the sexual abuse of an underage girl. Kemp plead guilty to felony charges of first-degree sexual abuse, second-degree sodomy, encouraging child sexual abuse and using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct.
The abuse was believed to have started when the girl was eight years old. The Lane County deputy district attorney Erik Hasselman had wanted a much longer sentence, but instead Kemp received the 19-year sentence as a Measure 11 mandatory minimum sentence.
Severe damage caused by fire at South Eugene home
Firefighters responded to a fire at a home on East Amazon Drive at 2:13 p.m. on Tuesday. The fire was reportedly started by a spark in the house and spread to the attic while no one was home. Luckily, there were no injuries.
Officials are estimating $150,000 worth of damage to the house at this time. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
