While a contingent of elite athletes from the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials will head to London to strut their stuff this summer, another group of competitors will remain home in order to stage some games of their own. From July 14-15 in Newberg, Ore., the 2012 Summer State Games for the Special Olympics will take place. The event represents state championship competitions in track and field, bocce, golf and softball.
Just like the athletes headed to London, these standouts won’t be facing off without proper preparation. All participants must qualify for the meet by advancing from the Summer Regional Games. Once they’ve qualified, the athletes train for eight weeks in their hometown.
The games are a product of Special Olympics Oregon, a not-for-profit charitable organization that provides sports training and athletic competition for persons with mental disabilities. SOOR is accredited by Special Olympics Inc. (SOI) and follows the rules and polices of that governing body in shaping its own events.
In total, Special Olympics Oregon serves more than 10,000 athletes throughout the state, and offers training and competition in 14 different Olympic-style sports through the year. In addition to the Summer Games, the organization also hosts competitions in the winter and fall.

Though Special Olympics Oregon already serves a significant number of athletes throughout the state, the organization is still aiming to expand its services. SOO estimates that over 70,000 people could benefit from participation. The good news is that the public can help SOO reach its goal with a simple contribution: volunteering.
Whether you pledge your help individually or as a member of a school, church or club, your time and effort is extremely appreciated. SOO has over 7,000 volunteers that provide 70,000 hours of service every year. Some pledge only a few hours on a single day, while others make year-round commitments. Regardless, all volunteers can see the immediate impact they’re having on people’s lives.
