One of Eugene’s classic bars and once an old haunt for track legend Steve Prefontaine, is the Old Pad. Located on East Amazon Drive by 33rd Avenue, the Pad has been serving Eugene bar food and beer for nearly 40 years.
Dan Turner, a bartender at the Old Pad, spoke about the history of the bar.
“The building has been around since early ’70s and the current management has been around six years,” Turner said. “We have 20 beers on tap and I’d say we’re a sports bar first and a restaurant second. We’ve got a real hometown feel.”
The Pad’s claim to fame is that Prefontaine used to work as a bartender there in the early 1970s.
“As far as the Pre, we’ve got regulars who used to hang out with Pre,” Turner said.
The bar has a large menu with monthly specials served everyday and breakfast until noon on weekdays and 2 p.m. on weekends.
The Pad has several pool tables, lots of comfortable seating and big screen TVs always flipped on for the most important games. It’s a safe bet those screens will be glued to the Olympic Trials in the coming weeks.
