Over the weekend, I began to panic about moving day. See, I’m heading back up to Portland on Wednesday of finals week and coming back that Saturday to move out my furniture with my parents. I began to stress out mainly because my room, and home for that matter, is a shit show.
My room has crap gathered from the school year littered about the floor and in the closets, while my living room, which I share with three other people, has mismatched furniture that has taken quite a beating over the year just asking for my mom to convince me to donate it. I’m scared mainly because my parents will both waltz into my home and demand I clean house and get rid of my precious memories.
So here’s my solution: get rid of the clutter before they tell me to and make me feel bad about my cleaning abilities.
It’s not like I’m a hoarder by any means, I just can’t stand it when people, especially your parents, tell you to get rid of stuff. That could be a magic hair tie you’ve been holding onto — you don’t know!
So first, when going through your clothes from this school year, make a pile of ones that you wore frequently and ones you never touched. Embarrassingly enough, about 60 percent of the clothes I brought down here I’ve never lifted off the bottom of the drawer. By making two separate piles, you will make sure that you don’t bring them with you next time.
After that, if you’ve discovered that your clothes are so fall of 2011, make sure you try and sell or donate your clothes. Buffalo Exchange is always the best place to go for step one. Next, donate your clothes to Value Village, which donates the proceeds to local charities.
Moving is a great opportunity for you to start fresh and get a new wardrobe if you have any loan money left over. Do your best to recycle your clothes as many people could benefit from your end of the year clothing raid.
So make sure you’ve done your planning correctly and you allow yourself plenty of time to neatly pack up your things! Enjoy what is left of the school year, fellow Ducks.
