Sen. Billy Hatch was nominated to be the next Senate treasurer Wednesday night, following the resignation of former Sen. Kyle McKenzie a week ago.
Hatch was the only senator nominated to fill the spot. His nomination will be voted on next week. Hatch has been performing the duties of treasurer in McKenzie’s absence.
Hatch said there is $17,258 left in the Senate’s surplus account, after more than $20,000 in spending requests were approved Wednesday.
Allen Hall Advertising was granted $10,000 to send 25 advertising students to a week-long festival in New York City. The University’s School of Journalism and Communication was one of 20 schools in the nation to be invited to exhibit work at the festival, according to the group’s request.
Sen. Sean Jin voted against the request, and Hatch abstained from the vote.
The Club Sports women’s water polo program received $5,000 to help with costs for hosting a national tournament. The group had to rent a pool at Mt. Hood Community College because the University does not have a pool large enough for the competition.
Representatives of the group said they were ranked fourth in the nation and have twice tried to achieve recognition as a Division I sport.
Sen. Nate Gulley told them “competitive cheer is a sham,” and it was a shame they did not have Division I status.
Sens. Samantha Brodey, Jones and Hatch abstained from the vote. Hatch said he abstained because he did not want to vote to give money to an EMU program while sitting on the EMU Board.
The African Student Association received $3,621 to pay for catering and other expenses for The Great 56 African Cultural Night. Representatives of the group said they cooked the food for last year’s event, but are expecting too many guests this year to prepare the food themselves. Jin abstained from the vote.
Black Women of Achievement requested $1,200 for an awards show honoring the achievements of men of color on campus. Because of other donations the group received since making its request, the Senate granted $696 for the event.
Jin abstained and Warnecke voted against the request after expressing concerns about not being able to find the request on the Web site.
The International Career Network Committee was granted $341 for a networking event to be held May 3.
