Winning the doubles points on Friday and Saturday against California and Stanford looked like it might set the Oregon men up for a successful Bay Area trip. Instead, the Ducks only won one other game and came away empty.
After winning two of three doubles games against Cal, only Francisco Gallardo at No. 2 singles and Mike Myrhed at No. 6 singles were able to win sets and the Ducks were defeated by the Golden Bears 6-1.
The Ducks started well against the Cardinal too, winning two of three doubles matches, but once again stumbled in singles play. Alexander Cornelissen won a three-set match, but Oregon lost to Stanford 5-2.
“It was very positive this week to sweep the doubles point in the Bay Area against two of the premier programs in the country,” Director of Tennis Nils Schyllander said. “I think we are growing as a team with every match we play.”
The men wrap up their regular season Saturday at Washington, before the Pacific-10 Conference championships start on April 23.
The women didn’t fare well either, dropping a pair of home matches to top-10 foes Cal and Stanford. Against the Bears Friday at the Student Tennis Center, the pair of Celine Rolly and Anna Powaska won at No. 1 doubles, but Cal won the doubles point with two wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Carmen Seremeta defeated Susie Babos at No. 2 singles for the Ducks’ lone point in their 6-1 loss to the No. 6 Bears.
Sunday’s match against No. 5 Stanford was not close. Stanford swept every set en route to a 7-0 win. The closest the Ducks got was Claudia Hirt’s 6-4, 6-4 loss at No. 5 singles to the Cardinal’s Carolyn McVeigh.
The match was the last of the regular season for the women. The Pac-10 championships start April 24.
