Eugene city councilors helped student renters protect themselves by making sure landlords put smoke detectors, window locks and door locks in every rental unit.
In a 6 to 2 vote Tuesday night, councilors amended the city’s Rental Housing Code to include the three security provisions and extended the code’s sunset to Dec. 31, 2011. The code was set to expire on Dec. 31, 2008.
