BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, CLANK, CRASH, BOOM… Imagine waking up to these sounds, everyday at 7 a.m. This has become a reality for a select few people who were unlucky enough to live in the Bean or Hamilton dorms. Make way for the new Mac Court! I only wish I could be so enthusiastic, but somewhere between the 7 a.m., wake-up calls and the impossibility of napping, I seem to have lost that great ambition. Even as I write this, I can see the workers dismembering the old bakery, or whatever that building was, and I find it hard to think clearly. With no less than 50 mini-earthquakes a day, I believe a cheaper housing rate is in store. Future residents should most especially get a reduction, since they will have to put up with construction for a whole year.
I live in Bean East Wilcox. We are now literally 40 feet from the heart of construction, and although it is neat to have a better view of the trees in the distance, it is not worth the annoyance. With all this talk of a new Mac Court, and a better Mac Court, I find myself asking, what was wrong with the old Mac Court? Is it really necessary to create a whole new building, which will cause our school to go into further debt, resulting in higher tuitions/fees?
I enjoyed going to Mac Court to watch basketball games. Although the wood seating and framing may not be the most comfortable, they are historic and awesome. Where else can you bang your feet on the ground to create tons of noise? Where else can you “go to the Pit?” The answer to that is soon to be nowhere. Spend the money elsewhere, where it is needed. Here’s a novel idea, fix up some of the dilapidated residence halls, such as Bean, instead of spending money on an unnecessary arena. Spend some money on the ordinary average student, instead of on the athletes all the time.

New arena’s benefits are not worth it for the students who have to live next to its construction site
