10. Crime: Our new government should reconsider the justice system and its approach to poverty in order to lower crime rates.
9. Marriage Rights: Every couple deserves to be treated equally.
8. Foreign Relations: Our new president must inspire the world to show that America can still serve as a force of good.
7. Reproductive Rights: The president has great power to either support or curtail a woman’s right to choose. Obama should do the former.
6. Corruption and Incompetence: The new president and Congress cannot allow lobbyists’ influence to continue to play such a strong role in deciding policies.
5. Health Care: Our leaders must help the millions of citizens without health care to meet their needs.
4. The War in Iraq and Terrorism: After five years in Iraq, protecting our national security now more than any other time will depend on wisely focusing our military efforts.
3. The Economy: The United States is in a serious economic crisis. Addressing this challenge is an absolute and immediate necessity of the new government. This must come before the war on terrorism: No country can succeed in providing for its national security if it is economically weak.
2. Education:In order to deal with the issues of today, it is essential that every American has access to a good education throughout his or her entire life.
1. The Environment: The environment is the single most important issue facing the next government. Ultimately, there can be no health care, no reproductive rights, no economy, and no security against terrorism if there is no environment. It is critical that after eight years of neglecting and worsening the environmental condition, our president and Congress take on the issues of global warming and resource depletion – and perhaps most importantly, renewable energy – if we are to provide for the future of America.
