I want to praise the Department of Public Safety (DPS) for adding 50 to 75 more spaces for bike racks that have been needed for a long time. It’s a positive addition that needs to continue and transform, just as our transportation choices need to take our environment into consideration.
People who bicycle to the University of Oregon, whether they are a student, employee, professor or visitor, should not be penalized for securing their bicycle to a pole, for example, if all bicycle racks are full. I agree that bicycles should not block access to buildings for others.
How about creating more secure bicycle space throughout campus, where bicycles could be hung vertically, either on the outside or inside of all buildings (or both)? Have dedicated bicycle parking areas, where bicycles aren’t blocking anything or anyone.
It’s time for the DPS and Campus Planning and Real Estate, and all other departments involved to create alternative bicycle parking and storage. There will be more and more bicyclists. The various departments involved at the University can work together to promote and encourage safe, healthy and environmentally friendly solutions with the increase of bicyclists in our community.
