Students are invited to “Meet the World Here” with the Mills International Center in celebration of the nationally recognized International Week.
This year’s theme strays from tradition and encompasses the entire world, rather than one particular region.
“It was my job to choose a region, and I just couldn’t do it,” Mills International Center Program Manager Adriane Bolliger said. “There are far too many amazing places in the world. So I chose the world, and the days just fell into place.”
Today’s festivities begin with a presentation on Spanish cinema from renowned Spanish film director Félix Viscarret at noon in the Mills International Center. His film “Under the Stars” will be shown in Lawrence Hall 115 at 7:30 p.m with light hors d’oeuvres served at 6:45 p.m.
Carson Dining Hall joins the celebration with “Dinner in Jamaica.” Between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. , students can expect to dine on Calypso pork chops, Jamaican jerk chicken, curried pineapple rice and coconut sugar cakes for five points or $9.95.
Today’s celebration ends with a presentation on the history and genocide of Cambodia given by University student Holly Mueller, the Friends of Cambodia and professor Kathie Carpenter.
“I went to Cambodia during my foreign exchange program in Thailand,” Mueller said. “I was surprised to find such a serious genocide in place, and when I came back and talked to friends about it, I was shocked to see that most of them had not heard of it either.”
Also in attendance will be Kilung Ung, a survivor of the genocide and Eugene resident. He escaped Cambodia after his family was killed and went to Thailand before coming to Eugene in 1979. The Mills International Center hopes International Week will reach out to students living on campus.
“We have the best couches in the EMU, and a computer lab waiting to be used. While most students think that Mills center is only open to international students, it’s open to everyone,” Bolliger explained. “Hopefully this week will bring students together and show them that.”
