Sophomore Ellie Manou hit two free throws with 28 seconds remaining as the Oregon women (3-2) edged out Wyoming, 51-45, at McArthur Court on Saturday night.
The Ducks had a 12-point first-half lead after freshman Jasmin Holliday converted a lay-up with 4:50 remaining, but the Cowgirls chipped away at the lead. Oregon entered the locker room holding on to a 25-22 lead.
Both teams came out sloppy in the second half; a three-point basket by junior Micaela Cocks made with 17:04 remaining was the first of the period. The Ducks rebuilt their lead to 14 points on a jumper by sophomore Nicole Canepa, but Wyoming came back again until Manou’s free throws effectively iced the game.
Neither team shot well from the field for the game; Oregon made 17 of 52 field goals (32.7 percent) and Wyoming made 18 of 50 field goals (36 percent). But the spoils went to the aggressor, as the Ducks shot 14 free throws (making 13) compared to seven attempts by the Cowgirls (with four made). Wyoming also committed 16 fouls to the Ducks’ 14.
Freshman forward Amanda Johnson led the Ducks with 13 points and was one of three, along with junior Lindsey Saffold and Holliday, who made seven rebounds. Manou and Cocks each added 12 points, and Cocks’ three assists also led Oregon.
Forward Emma Langford was the only Cowgirl in double-figure scoring with 10 points, and center Rebecca Vanderjagt filled up the stat sheet with six points, six rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals.
Oregon guard junior Taylor Lilley missed the game and remains day-to-day with her shin injury.
